URL Media Raises $5 Million to Expand Its BIPOC Network and Revenue Lines 

The publisher network URL Media has secured a $5 million grant from the Knight Foundation, a transformative investment for the startup that will enable it to grow its business, build new revenue infrastructure, and expand support for the communities it serves.

Founded in 2021 by media veterans Sara Lomax and S. Mitra Kalita, URL Media operates a network of independent publishers serving Black, Latino, Asian, Indigenous, and immigrant audiences, helping monetize the publishers and providing additional services. The company began with eight publisher partners and has since grown to 37 outlets, including Capital B, Epicenter, Scalawag, and Documented. With the new funding, it plans to more than triple that footprint.
